SLA@WSU Meeting 9.15.07
Saturday, September 15, 2007
The meeting began at 1 pm with introductions of SLA officers and students. In total, there were 3 officers and 14 students present.
Karly explained that student SLA events will be posted on the listserv as "SLA@WSU" and that these events are free and open to all LIS students.
Professional chapter events will be posted on the listserv as "Michigan chapter SLA" and these events usually have a $15 student fee to attend and may take place in locations throughout the state.
She then discussed the advantages, such as networking, of attending Michigan chapter events and joining the professional chapter of SLA. Brochures were available to those who were interested.
Next we discussed events that SLA@WSU has planned for the upcoming 07-08 year:
- Tour of the University of Michigan map library and special collections library
- Sept 27, 6 pm in Ann Arbor
- "Lunch & Learn" lecture on Competitive Intelligence by Prof. Field - Oct 16,
11:30 am - 12:30 pm, place TBD
- Tour of Masonic Temple Library and building in Detroit - tentatively scheduled
for October or November
- Tour of a local correctional facility library - Jessica Keyser is still making
arrangements
- Tour of the Detroit Institute of Arts Research Library - tentatively scheduled
for winter term 2008
- Volunteer opportunity with InsideOut Detroit - Kim Huston discussed the organization and the type of volunteer work available. A sign-up sheet was passed around for those who were interested.
- University of Michigan SLA chapter is hosting a conference on questioning authority in March 2008 and invited all interested students to participate. This information will be posted to the SLA@WSU website.
It was agreed on by those present that promoting SLA events on the LIS listserv multiple times, beginning 4-6 weeks in advance and ending 2-3 days in advance, was best.
Next we discussed events and ideas that members would be interested in participating in during the 07-08 year:
- Tour of the Cranbrook Art library
- T-shirt sales
- Dinner & Learn (for those who can't attend Lunch & Learn's)
- Either a Dinner & Learn or a Lunch & Learn on grant writing
- Tour of a records management facility
- Tour of the Reuther Library and Bensen Ford Research Center. Since both of these facilities are archives and not special libraries, Karly thought it may be best for those types of tours to be organized by SAA (SAA is already planning a
tour of the Reuther Library). However, there is no reason why SLA members can not also attend SAA events (just as SAA members are invited to attend SLA events).
- A report on the proceedings of annual SLA meetings, including how to access papers and other materials that were presented there
- Tour of special libraries in Canada. Windsor, Stratford and Toronto were suggested.
- Tour of the Art Train Library in Ann Arbor, which is a traveling exhibit that recently received an award from First Lady Laura Bush
- Craft day for members to make their own book snakes
Finally, Karly mentioned there are two officer positions still open: Secretary and Treasurer.
The meeting concluded at 2 pm.
