Guest Speaker: Louis Jones

Louis Jones, Certified Archivist at the Reuther Library and Archives of Labor Affairs, will be giving a workshop on archival careers on Monday, March 26.

Louis Jones has over 13 years of experience as an archivist at Wayne State University’s Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs where he is the archivist for the Service Employees International Union and, for a short period, served as interim associate director. He has been a Certified Archivist since 1994. At Wayne he serves as a co-director of the Detroit African American History Project, which is a Web site providing information and insight on the history of African Americans in metropolitan Detroit. In addition, he has functioned as curator or assistant curator for several historically-based exhibits, consulted with organizations about their historical records, performed in leadership positions within archival organizations, presented papers at conferences, lectured in university settings and conducted numerous oral histories.

 Louis received his bachelors in history from Morehouse College (1983), a masters in African and Afro-American Studies from Cornell University (1985) and a second masters in American history from the University of Delaware (1992). It is from this last institution where he received his training as an archivist. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in American history from Wayne State University where his dissertation topic concerns the development of public employee unionism in metropolitan Detroit during the immediate post World War II era.

Elizabeth Adkins, President of the national Society of American Archivists and Director of Global Information Management at Ford Motor Company, will present a lecture on the future of archives.  All are invited to attend.  Ms. Adkins' biography is available on the SAA website.
