February

February 16, 2006

Are you an archival student who is about to graduate? Is your resume ready for the real world?

Join SAA on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006 for a resume panel discussion and workshop. This is a two-part event that starts at 4pm. The first segment is a discussion about resume writing for the archival profession. Everyone is welcome to sit in, but archival resumes will be the focus of the discussion. The first part of the program will take place in the Reuther Room on the second floor of the Reuther Library.

The second segment - the workshop - IS RSVP ONLY. Space is limited for this event and priority will be given to SAA student members and students graduating this semester. You will be notified where the resume workshop will be held when you RSVP. The deadline for priority registration is FEB. 1.

Initial Itinerary:
4-5pm
From 4 to about 5pm, four archival professionals will share what they look for in resumes. There will be a moderated discussion, so start pondering some questions for our panelists, who will be:

- Mike Smith, Director of the Walter P. Reuther Library at Wayne State University
- Kim Schroeder, Archive Media Partners, Professor at Wayne State University
- Elizabeth Adkins, Director of Global Information Management (GIM) at Ford Motor Company, Distinguished SAA Fellow
- William Wallach, Associate Director of the Bentley Historical Library at University of Michigan, Distinguished SAA Fellow

5-5:30pm
Workshop attendees will switch rooms, have a coffee break and proceed with the workshop. Each student taking part in this workshop should bring at least 5 copies of their updated resumes.

Note: Kim Schroeder teaches after the discussion and will not be able to review resumes. However, Leslie Armbruster, who works with Elizabeth Adkins and participates in the hiring process has graciously volunteered her time to review resumes.

5:30-7pm
Resume workshop begins. The workshop participants will be split into 4 groups of no more than five people to each group. Each group will be headed by an archival professional. Bring five copies of your personal, updated resumes and have them critiqued by these folks. We specifically picked the professionals because they have a lot to do with the hiring process.  This is where the professionals will be able to set up the group resume review.

Please, please, please remember to RSVP Eva at av7208@wayne.edu by Feb. 1.
